Mattox v. U.S., No. 667 (U.S. Supreme Court) (156 U.S. 237; 15 S.Ct. 337) (February 4, 1995) (Justice Brown)

Here the Court observed that "the primary objective [of the Sixth Amendment] . . . Was to prevent depositions or ex parte affidavits from being used against the prisoner in lieu of a personal examination and cross-examination of the witness.".
